La Méridienne lies at the edge of the hamlet of Le Chêne, in the commune of Gargas, a few kilometres from Apt, in the Petit Luberon. The landscape opens here without emphasis: hills, light, openness. Not a place of passage, not a tourist centre — rather a transition between village and nature.
Three houses
Three houses: Maison Principale, the Studio and the Citronière form the ensemble. Their layout allows for both shared living and independence.
Moments together and retreat are equally possible: three kitchens, four bathrooms, terraces, quieter garden areas, and spaces that leave room to breathe.
A large residential building forms the open-plan heart of the property: a spacious kitchen, a large living room, and a terrace for shared meals and long evenings. Alongside these are quiet spaces – for reading, working, reflecting, and sleeping. Here, community arises not out of necessity, but by choice. Another house, known as the ‘Studio’, stands separately and can be used entirely independently. It is equally suited as a self-contained retreat or as part of the whole.
The garden forms part of this structure. Sculptures stand amongst the lavender, scrubland and Provençal herbs, unobtrusive and perfectly at home. This atmosphere continues inside too: art, pictures, books – traces of a cosmopolitan life that speak for themselves. A spacious swimming pool lies between the houses.
The landscape changes markedly with the seasons. Summer is intense and bathed in light, whilst winter is quiet and austere, with virtually no tourism. In between lie the milder months, when the landscape reveals itself: on foot, by bike, along narrow roads, winding tracks and through canyons. La Meridienne has evolved over generations. Each generation has added to it without overpowering it – an approach that continues to this day.
